A sentient lion killed for fun?
The EU allows importation of “sport” hunting trophies, but meanwhile the EU says this:
“When the Lisbon Treaty came into force in 2009 it amended the 'Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union' (TFEU) and introduced the recognition that animals are sentient beings. Article 13 of Title II states that:
In formulating and implementing the Union's agriculture, fisheries, transport, internal market, research and technological development and space policies, the Union and the Member States shall, since animals are sentient beings, pay full regard to the welfare requirements of animals….”
So the EU recognizes that animals are sentient beings but allows imports of animal trophies hunted for amusement? And allows EU “hunters” to import canned lion trophies from South Africa despite a complete lack of animal welfare?
That is what LionAid will bring to the attention of EU Parliament and the EU Commission. We will ask you for your support soon to write letters to your Members of European Parliament (we will daft the letter for you) and we will then ask your support to join in an EU Citizen’s Initiative when the time comes.
