Greg Hunt 1

From L to R: Dr Pieter Kat, The Hon. Greg Hunt, Chris Macsween, John Rendall

Today we were invited to a meeting with the Hon. Greg Hunt, Australian Minister of Environment, at the Australian High Commission in London, during his brief visit to the UK.

He was accompanied by Dr Gordon de Brouwer (Permanent Secretary, Dept Environment), Andrew Brooke (First Secretary, Australia High Commission, London), John O' Doherty (Senior Media Adviser to the Minister) and Alex Caroly (Senior Adviser to the Minister).

Australia is the first country to pass legislation to ban all lion trophy imports from entering their country and we were absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to discuss with them how we might collaborate to encourage other nations to join Australia's groundbreaking example.

We discussed with Minister Hunt and his colleagues what he called the “why and how” to improve lion conservation threats by urgently removing trophy hunting from the menu of challenges lions today face in their struggle for survival.

It was a highly positive meeting, and LionAid will continue to discuss with Minister Hunt the best ways forward.
